East Coast Watercross Season Finale at Sylvan Beach Ends in Weather Shutdown
The East Coast Watercross season finale, held on September 7th and 8th at Sylvan Beach, was cut short due to extreme weather conditions on Oneida Lake. The weekend was marked by heavy rain and gusty winds, making it a challenge for racers and event organizers alike.
Saturday began with the first motos running as planned, but worsening conditions forced the cancellation of the remaining second motos after a few heats. Despite the weather, the evening awards ceremony went ahead, acknowledging the season’s standout performances.
By Sunday, the situation had deteriorated further, with 45 mph wind gusts and unpredictable 10-foot waves battering the course. The escalating danger prompted event organizers to pause racing around 11 a.m. for safety assessments. While monitoring the weather forecasts, it became clear that conditions would continue to worsen. A nearby water rescue by the local fire department further solidified the decision to cancel the remaining races for the safety of all involved.
Although the season ended abruptly, the weekend highlighted the grit of the competitors and the dedication of the event team, who handled the challenges with professionalism amidst extreme circumstances.
